Suspended Russian Priest Following Navalny Memorial Service

A decision on the Moscow diocese website states that a priest who presided over a memorial ceremony for the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny last month has been suspended by the Russian Orthodox Church.

At the Moscow cemetery of Navalny, on March 26, 40 days after the Kremlin critic's death in an Arctic prison, Priest Dmitry Safronov conducted a memorial service. Memorial ceremonies for the deceased are customarily held on the fortyth day following their passing, in accordance with Orthodox tradition.

Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church has issued an edict prohibiting Safronov from bestowing blessings, donning the frock, and bearing the clerical cross for a period of three years, beginning on April 15, 2024.

Patriarch Kirill has firmly supported Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and is a staunch ally of President Vladimir Putin.
